Trump Jr. learns about old tweets coming back to haunt him

For Donald Trump Jr., school is in session. The lesson he is learning is a hard one. The one about posting things on social media that will come back to bite one in the butt.

On September 16th, 2016, Don Jr. decided to tweet about the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton. He weaponized it to use against Hillary Clinton in the heat of the 2016 presidential campaign. This is what he wrote:

So, now that his father has endured the same fate, it is safe to say that this tweet did not age well.

There are a few key differences between the impeachments, however. For one thing, Bill Clinton was impeached over an embarrassing personal matter. Namely, having an affair with Monica Lewinski, who, at the time, worked in the White House. Clinton lied about the affair to investigators. By contrast, Trump was impeached for endangering national security and abusing his office as President by asking for Ukraine to “dig up dirt” on his political rival and leading opposition party candidate for President in 2020, Joe Biden.

One similarity, both received an article of impeachment for obstruction (Clinton for obstructing justice, Trump for obstructing Congress). Clinton got his charge for mostly making false statements involving Lewinski or other women. Trump’s obstruction stems from a blanket refusal to let any of his people testify or hand over documents related to the investigation.

Some could say that being impeached over endangering the nation’s national security is a far more serious charge than lying about an affair, something just about everyone who has an affair does. By contrast, most people don’t endanger national security for personal gain or to win elections. When Clinton was impeached, he had no elections to run in, as he was in his 2nd term as President. Trump is only in his 1st term.

Regardless, as the old saying goes, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Perhaps Don Jr. realizes that now — now that his father has been deplorably impeached.

Pot, meet kettle.
